The side that Beth
did turned out great. Then, the following day I turned the top around so that I could join
the other side section to the main top assembly. I did not fare as well. With all the
dowels inserted and glue spread, I started to mesh the two pieces but something hung up
and for a precious 5 minutes or so I used everything I could use. Certainly Beth's love
taps were far exceeded. So, I did the only thing I could do, and that was to walk away
from it and take it on the next day.
On that next day, I was able to easily slide my credit card in the crack.

I worked up the
"correction" procedure some months ago. It works very well. First, I add
one clamp at each side of table and at both ends. These clamps hold the pieces so that
when I saw, they won't move. Then, I lay the long Festool guide rail aligning the edge
right at the cut.

 |
 |
I have set the
saw plunge depth so that it cuts about 1/4" deeper than the table top. The 1-inch
foam insulation board will protect the underside of the cut.
|
My job is easy
simply move the saw along the guide.
With each cut, I move the off side closer to the main top piece and reclamp
it and make the same cut again.
|
 |
 |
It took two more cuts, but
now the joint is right-on all along the length.
|
With the edges
jointed properly, I can start the doweling process again. I will use the same pencil marks
all the way along the boards but have the left side of the jig butt against these marks,
This is the first position, and if you recall, we drilled two holes at the end. You can
see how tight the "old" dowels fit their holes.

 |

|
With the holes carefully
drilled on this side section and the top section, I am ready to add glue and install the
dowels.
|
Just as Beth did, I brushed
a pretty fine coat of glue over the dowel pins and the board edges.
|
 |
 |
The
joining went much easier this time. I had ready some heavy duty hammers ready, but the
side slid on its dowels right up to the top section. This time slight lovetaps and gentle
clamping gave me a tight fit all the way from one end to the other.
We can now get to the base details.
