Project - "Making a Blanket Chest using the New Jessem router table and the Akeda
Dovetail Jig"
During
the week, I had completed the installing of the aromatic cedar. Beth checks it over and
pops in the final brad.
Beth takes a few
minutes to do a quick inspection and sand any rough edges.
The aromatic cedar is
prefinished (sanded smooth) on one side, but Beth finds that a quick once over with some
600 grit paper smoothes out any blemishes.
The piano hinge I got from
my home center was 48" long a bit longer than what we need here.
She has carefully centered the hinge on the back and is marking where to cut. Beth
will make two cuts.
Beth has laid
another piece of lumber over the chest so that she can cut the hinge easily.
She tries the shortened
piano hinge in place.
She gives a self-centering
hole punch a good rap. I had a Vix bit out, but even the smallest made too large a starter
hole for the tiny screws that come with the hinge.
Beth only puts three screws
in place at this point.
It is hard to set the top
where it is best aligned, but Beth manages to do it. A couple of clamps here and there,
and the top stays in place as she sets a few screws.
With just the few screws in
place, Beth checks the fit. It is perfect.
Beth uses the EZ Square and
a clamp to allow the lid to be opened and not put a strain on the screws in place.
Well, the lid is
secured with all the screws and Beth has gone over everything with a piece a sandpaper.
After getting rid of as much sawdust as she could, she is ready to start the
sanding/sealer application.
Beth takes a quick check of all
the surfaces.
Next week, we will be going through all the steps of finishing this blanket
chest. Then on to some new products and projects and maybe more help from Beth.
