Project - "Making a Blanket Chest using the New Jessem router table and the Akeda
Dovetail Jig"
Beth spreads carpenter's glue over the joint and the biscuits. The biscuits
help alignment of the two sections, but the strength of the joint will be largely
dependent on how well the edges mate.
You would think that I
would put the camera down and help her. Nah!!! In fact, the section is light and Beth is
just taking care to put it on without getting the glue over everything.
She had success aligning the
biscuits and is now just easing the top section down.
With the top section seated,
Beth has rolled the whole assembly over so that she can add a couple of clamps. The seams
on all four sides are perfect. The clamps only need light pressure to achieve some minor
squeeze out.
She now places
clamps along the opposite side.
While the chest is drying,
Beth starts cutting other pine boards to length for both the top and the bottom.
Beth is trying
to determine where she can cut the top with no knots in the edges. There is a lot of board
to select from. It is much easier to do it now than after the boards are glued up.
Before she cuts
the biscuit slots, she uses the jig to take away a "hair" of the edges which
will be joined. They are very close, but the jig makes it easy and quick going.
With the boards jointed, she
makes marks for placement of the biscuits.
She switches back to the
slot cutter and makes her cuts. While it would seem like extra work to switch back
to the straight bit for jointing and then back again for the slot cutter, it takes a very
little amount of time and energy to do this. Being able to crank the router up to change
bits and then back to the cutting depth in just seconds makes the change "... a piece
of cake."
