Last week I had many readers asking
questions about the Domino's "auto-positioning" feature. First, let me say
that is my name for it. It starts by using the two indexing pins that are
built into the Festool Domino Joiner. Both pins are spring loaded and
retract when pressed.
Here is how they are used. I start at
the left edge of a panel and press the Festool Domino Jointer right until
the left-hand indexing pin is against the left edge of the board - as in
this picture.
In that position, Elena makes the
mortise by simply pressing in on the Domino — it really takes just a second
or two.
When she moves the Festool Domino Joiner
to the other edge and use the other indexing pin, this is the nice mortise
she gets.
She can play leap-frog from either of
these first mortises and make more but they will be close together. Here she
is installing the Cross Stop attachments.
You can see that they fit accurately
into the dovetailed base and lock in place.
On each side, Elena can bow adjust
the spacing of the Cross Stop indexing pins and lock them in place.
With them set and locked, Elena now has
four indexing pins to use for the auto-spacing.
Typically she would use the internal pin
to place the first mortise close to the edge of the board.
And the same on the right hand edge.
