Here is a dial that allows you to adjust
the width of the mortise. Of course, they must vary for different width
tenons. But, they also can vary for a given tenon if you want
to add some side "play". In our case, we made the center mortise to be exact
fitting and the others to be a bit wider.

These are the two middle mortises and
they are exact fitting . Andrea used the narrow setting. The others were
made with the middle setting.

Andrea uses the new glue dispenser to
give a uniform coat to the board edges and tenons. After years of using the
bottle, misplacing the cap, dropping the battery brushes and not giving a
complete coverage, I decided to buy this dispenser for the shop. Anything
this ugly has to work. Surprisingly, we have had it for 3 months and the
glue stays without evaporation or thickening. I bought it at Rockler. (link
at bottom of this a page.)

Andrea gets a good, even glue
distribution on the edges and the tenons.
|
It is a precision fit. The tenons match
up exactly.

Once started, she turns the boards on
edge and with a few hits from her palm, she joins the boards.
|
She places the boards into clamps along
with the Bow-Clamp Cauls and tightens them. They fit very well and don't
need much clamping pressure.

What a great final picture. Two boards
glued up with a very tight joint all the way along the length and flat and
straight. You can't ask for better than that.
As for a first use of the Festool Domino Joining System?
Andrea and I think we did well, or more exactly, the Domino System, did
well.
Panel glue ups alone will not pay for the System. We will be using
it for face frames, cabinet/door/drawer construction, chair building — you
name it, we will try it. If wood is to be joined, we will see if the Domino
System is the joiner. Stay tuned.
